SHILLONG: A food safety official said on Saturday it was “impossible” to find who were involved in the “formalin racket”.
The official said it could not be concluded whether the fish with traces of formalin were routed from Andhra Pradesh and “the racket might have taken place along the way while the fish were being brought to the state and formalin might have been added at any level”.
When asked if it was possible to inject formalin in each and every fish, the official said, “Since the consignments come in trucks it is humanly impossible to inject formalin in each and every fish. It is possible only in case of small consignments.”
Earlier this week, the state government banned import of fish for 15 days following reports of traces of formalin in some fish samples.
