TURA: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is taking a head start by being the first to file his nomination for the by-election to South Tura constituency on Tuesday.

Filing of nominations began on Monday with the notification of the by-poll in the official gazette. There were no nominations on day one.

The chief minister is expected to arrive shortly before noon to file his nomination papers with the returning officer in the premises of the Tura Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is expected to be accompanied by his family members, including his mother and widow of P A Sangma, and also elder brother and home minister James Pangsang K Sangma.

Younger sister Agatha K Sangma, who gave up her seat to pave the way for her elder brother and chief minister to seek entry into the state assembly is also expected to accompany her mother Soradini K Sangma to the nomination venue.

While the NPP moves into campaign mode following the filing of nomination papers, the opposition Congress is yet to officially announce its candidature. State congress leaders have said that only one name, that of retired school principal Charlotte W Momin, has been sent up to the party high command for approval.
