Train service disrupted on narrow gauge in Darjeeling hills due to landslide

GUWAHATI:  Landslide induced by unrelenting rain in Darjeeling hills has disrupted train service on the narrorw gauge section of the heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR).

The landslide caused damaged to about 60 meters of the narrow gauge railway track of the DHR resulting in disruption of train movements since Wednesday afternoon, according to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) chief spokesman, P J Sharma.

Incessant rain triggered a major landslide km 37/11-13 at Lower Paglajhora between Gayabari and Mahanadi of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) at around 1.30 pm yesterday and as a result approximately 60 metres of railway track was damaged by falling boulders thereby causing disruption   train movements in the section.

Since the boulder slip is occurring in frequent intervals, restoration work will be undertaken only after cessation of rain and stabilization of the topography. Therefore, keeping in view the safety of passengers 52540 / 52541 New Jalpaiguri – Darjeeling Passenger has been cancelled from 2nd to 5th August 2018.
