SHILLONG: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) suggested  both private and public contractors to refrain from hiring labourers from outside the state without proper verification as a precautionary measure to check influx of immigrants.

This was as per the letter written by the KHNAM to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma as they lent support to the growing demand for the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Inner Line Permit (ILP).

President of the regional political party, Pyndapborthiaw Saibon said the police department should carry out regular checks at various sites where project work was being carried out.

Again, KHNAM stated that all private companies operating in the state should  be advised not to recruit fresh employees without proper verification and without consultation with the Police Department.

He added additional forces and additional check gates at all entry and exit points were deployed and stated that the Dorbar Shnong has to be vigilant to curb issue of illegal immigrants.

With the state government keen to discuss the NRC exercise, Saibon found the response of the state government as encouraging.

Stating that Meghalaya has been soft targets of illegal immigrants for the past three decades, he said the demand for updated NRC in the state should be given due consideration.

Fearing the entry of illegal immigrants whose names were left out from the final draft NRC in Assam, Saibon suggested the implementation of ILP as well.
