SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) in collaboration with the Office of the Sub-Divisional Officer, Sohra Civil Sub-Division had organised an awareness programme on Human Rights at St. John’s Bosco Shrine Hall, Maraikapon in Sohra on Tuesday.
The programme aimed at highlighting the various rights and legal remedies which the public can resort to whenever their basic human rights were being infringed upon.
Speaking in the programme, the chief guest Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, chairperson of MHRC, stressed on the importance of knowing the Constitution. He enlightened the participants on the Right to Liberty, Equality and Dignity.
“These rights are enshrined in the Constitution of India to safeguard the citizens from any violation of human rights,” he said.
He encouraged everyone to gain as much knowledge as possible on these issues and to approach the Commission whenever there are any cases of violation under the purview of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
Others who spoke on the occasion included A. S. Mukhim, BDO, Shella Bholaganj C&RD Block, Banteilang Kharjana, SDPO, Sohra and P. Nongrum Assistant Public Prosecutor. A. Mawlong, secretary MHRC and L. Kynjing, SDO (C), Sohra Civil Sub-Division were also present.
The programme was followed by an interactive session whereby teachers and students posed questions and exchanged ideas on various topics relating to Human Rights.
