SHILLONG: Congress candidate from Ranikor Jackiush A Sangma is facing criminal cases which include arms smuggling and criminal conspiracy.
According to the affidavit filed by the candidate, there are three cases pending against him in the courts of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Shillong, Sessions Judge in Tura and Judicial magistrate, First Class, in Williamnagar.
The affidavit said in the first case, the court took cognizance against him under Section 120 (B), for criminal conspiracy, and Section 121, for waging war against the Government of India.
In the second case, the court took cognizance against him under Sections 498 (A)/307/354/506/323 of the IPC.
While Section 498(A) deals with domestic violence, 307 is for attempting to murder, 354 for assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty, 506 for criminal intimidation and Section 323 for voluntarily causing hurt.
In the third case, the court took cognizance against himunder Sections 10/13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Two police sources confirmed that Sangma was arrested earlier in Shillong in a case of arms smuggling in 2011.
Police had in the past claimed that he was associated with GNLA.
In November 2011, two persons were picked up along with Sangma from a car from Polo area when they were allegedly trying to cut an arms deal. Police had also found Rs 11.9 lakh in their possession and later arrested three gun runners from a hotel in Police Bazar.
