JOWAI: Over 2000 muster rolls working in various departments in East and West Jaintia Hills have not been paid their dues for the last six months.
“Many of them have been evicted from their rented houses as they could not pay their rent while their children were stopped from attending school as their parents could not pay their fees”, informed the newly elected president of the Jaintia PWD Muster Roll Workers and Labour Union, L Pariat.
The state Labour department in West Jaintia Hills has failed to help the members of the Muster Roll Workers Union in terms of various schemes particularly to those members who have been registered under the MB&OCW Board.
”All benefits were not provided to the workers”, Pariat said, adding that the educational scholarship for their children was denied by the State Bank of India stating that the Labour department issued an invalid cheque for the scholarship.
The Workers and Labour Union urged the Labour Minister to look into the matters immediately else they will be forced to go to Meghalaya High Court for justice.
The union has demanded regular payment and not once in six or seven months. The union also supported the decision of the state government to hike the daily wages to Rs. 300 per month which was supposed to be implemented from April 2018.
The union also demanded fixing the retirement age for the muster roll workers, implementation of the Meghalaya Regular Casual Workers Scheme besides others.
