NONGPOH: The high-handedness of Assam police in the border villages of Ri Bhoi continues with residents of Umru blaming the neighbouring state for destruction of property.
The villagers alleged that Assam police along with officials of the neighbouring state’s forest department demolished a community hall and two houses constructed under the Indira Awaas Yojana around 2pm on Monday.
Sources said neither the officials nor the police consulted the villagers before taking any action.
The Assam government had started constructing a police outpost at Umru but that was stopped due to timely intervention by the district administration of Ri Bhoi.
When contacted, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Rosetta Mary Kurbah said she had received information about the incident and instructed the district police to depute an officer for spot inquiry. The inquiry report is yet to be submitted.
Kurbah also said the matter would be taken up with the higher authority of the state government.
