SHILLONG: The short autumn session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly begins on Friday with the Opposition set to raise the status of Harijan Colony, recognition to Khasi-Garo languages and NRC related issues.
Congress leader PT Sawkmie said the Opposition will raise the issues of early solution to Harijan Colony, border dispute, NRC, inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the constitution, among others.
The private members will get two days (September 24 and 26). Three days (September 21, 25 and 27) will be allotted for government business. Besides law and order, the Opposition will also raise the issue of the plight of farmers as the community is facing many hardships.
In addition, the Congress is also set to raise the issue of SSA schoolteachers whose salaries have not been paid till date. The issue of traffic congestion in the city will also be taken up during the five-day session.
Congress leader Zenith Sangma said he cannot comment about the strategy of the party while adding that the Opposition reacts based on the response of the government on different issues.
The session would continue till September 27.
Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills district administration has imposed Section 144 CrPC within 500 meters of the temporary Assembly chamber at Rilbong and 100 meters of Meghalaya Secretariat following reports that some NGOs might hold a protest by displaying placards in front of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on the first day of the session.
The order also prohibited carrying of arms, lethal weapons or other items having the potential to be used as a weapon which can likely cause grievous injury or harm to any person or persons.
