SHILLONG: Scheduled Caste (SC) students in the state have not been getting their post metric scholarships since 2015.
After Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed the House on Tuesday about the matter during the question hour, Congress MLA Charles Pyngrope said the government should follow up the issue.
He said it is a cause for concern that SC students are not getting the scholarship for a long time.
Earlier, to a question by George Lyngdoh (Congress), Rymbui said the delay in the release of the scholarships was due to the non-receipt of sanction from the Centre. The minister said the post metric scholarship worth over Rs 4 crore meant for the SC students are yet to be released by the Centre.
The state government had sent reminder letters to the Centre but in vain.
According to the minister, pre-primary scholarships to SC students are also pending.
The Opposition MLAs said the delay in releasing the scholarship “is illegal and unconstitutional”.
Rymbui said the matter will be taken up with the Centre.
Stating that he does not know the reason for the delay on the part of the Centre to release the pending scholarship, the minister said there is no point in inviting applications if the Centre does not release the scholarship amount.
