SHILLONG: Plenty Makri, a resident of Bhoirymbong in Ri Bhoi, gave up her career in Shillong over a decade ago as she found her calling in something more meaningful.
Makri came back to her remote village, Thadnongiaw, to take care of underprivileged children there and started an orphanage.
The middle-aged woman worked as a nurse in a city hospital in 2002 and dedicated full time in looking after the orphanage that started with 10 children. There are now more than 40 children. She also runs a primary school.
However, in her novel mission Makri has found little help from the government but that has not dampened the gritty woman’s spirit.
Makri is the receiver of 100 Best Women Award by former president Pranab Mukherjee for her social work.
