TURA: A large number of supporters of Clement Marak paid tribute to the leader on the arrival of his mortal remains to Selsella on Wednesday afternoon.
The body of Clement Marak was brought in a convoy from Shillong to his constituency where it was kept at his home for a couple of hours for his supporters and well-wishers to bid farewell to their leader for the last time.
“The body arrived in Selsella around 4.30 pm and was kept at his home for about three hours. A large number of his supporters have been coming to the place for the last two days after they heard about his untimely demise, waiting to pay their last homage to the leader,” informed Congress workers in Selsella.
Several Congress leaders from the state, including former chief minister Mukul Sangma, senior Congress legislator and former speaker Charles Pyngrope and MLA H M Shangpliang were among those who escorted the body from Shillong to Selsella.
The body was brought back to Tura to his home in Hawakhana before the last rites take place on Thursday morning.
The funeral cortege, carrying the body, is expected to move from his home around 11.30am on Thursday to the Hawakhana Baptist church for the service after which it will be taken to his final resting place at the Rongkhon Songgital Baptist cemetery.
NPP condoles death
The executive committee and members of the National People’s Party condoled the death of Marak in a meeting held at its party office in Tura on Wednesday.
“He was a man of good personality and earned reputation irrespective of caste, community and religion. His untimely death is an irreparable loss to the people of Garo Hills and Meghalaya in general,” the condolence message read.
The meeting also observed two minutes’ silence.
Marak died in a private hospital in Delhi.
