SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has taken up the issue of widening the road from Shillong to NEIGRIHMS.
The matter came up in connection with the pending suo motu PIL regarding the condition of roads in the state.
The division bench comprising Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice SR Sen said the Amicus Curiae appointed by the court highlighted that the road from Shillong to NEIGRIHMS is completely in a dilapidated condition.
Besides one of the prestigious medical institutes, NEIGRIHMS located in the area, it is also an upcoming town with several important institutions located there, the court said.
In the public interest, it is the obligation of the welfare state to ensure proper road connectivity more so, for ailing people who often require treatment from NEIGRIHMS, the court added.
The additional senior government advocate assured that the matter will be taken up with the government and they will come up with a plan and suggestion regarding widening and repairing the road from Shillong to NEIGRIHMS.
An affidavit will be filed on or before the next date in this regard.
Wahkdait to Dawki
Amicus Curiae has been asked to collect the information about the present status of the work regarding other roads, including the damaged portions of the road starting from Wahkdait to Dawki where pot-hole repairing of the remaining 90 meters has been completed.
For repairing the entire stretch, the contractor has been urged to complete it within four months. Earlier, the deadline was 12 months which was not acceptable and therefore, the Executive Engineer has been asked to ensure repairing within four months.
7th Mile to Pynursla
Regarding the road from 7th Mile to Pynursla, the contractor, according to the engineer, was requested to complete the resurfacing works within four months.
Tura-Baghmara-Siju
The additional senior government advocate said regarding the road from Tura to Baghmara and from Baghmara to Siju, construction work and repairing were in progress except for some portions due to certain disputes, but corrective measures have been taken.
The matter will be taken up on November 5.
