TURA: In the light of a major religious conference due to take place in Adokgre of North Garo Hills, early next year, the National People’s Party MLA of Kharkutta, Rupert Momin, has apprised the North Eastern Council of the urgent need to undertake a major renovation of the crucial road that leads from neighbouring Assam to the venue.

The NPP legislator called on Ram Muivah, Secretary of the NEC, in Shillong on Monday to apprise him of the deplorable condition of the road which is a lifeline for the people of Garo Hills residing in that area.

The road from Adokgre connects to the trading town of Dhupdhara in Assam and will be used by thousands of Christian devotees when they come to participate in the Garo Baptist Conference that is taking place in January.

During the discussion, Momin pointed out that there is an urgent need to widen the Adokgre road from Kharkutta town inside Garo Hills towards Darrangre road on the Assam side.

“A total of 12 kms of the Dhupdhara to Adokgre road has been in a deplorable condition for a long time and needs urgent repair. We have requested the NEC to take up repair of the road on a priority basis which will benefit the people from both the states,” said legislator Rupert Momin to the media after submitting a memorandum on the issue to the NEC.

According to the Kharkutta legislator, the NEC team gave an assurance that the memo would be given to the chief secretary of Assam with a request for urgent repair from the side of the Assam government since the NEC was no longer handles road projects.
