Rotary Club sets up WinS project in Ri-Bhoi school

NONGPOH: The Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong (RVOCS)  has set up a Wash in School (WinS) Project at Auxillium Umpohliew Jingstad Secondary School, Mawtnum, Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya.

Being the first of its kind project in the District, the WinS Project here was jointly contributed by the school and the Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong.

Local legislator of Umsning, Jason Sawkmie Mawlong inaugurated the project in a function held at the school premise on Tuesday.

A total of 16 wash stations were set-up in the school to enable the school children to wash their hands after playing, coming from toilets or even after having their lunch to prevent many diseases.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Mawlong lauded the initiative of Rotary Club of Orchid Shillong and the Auxillium Umpohliew Jingstad Secondary School, Mawtnum for their initiative to implement this kind of project to achieve total sanitation in every for the school.

Being the newly elected member of State Legislative Assembly, Mawlong informed that he had visited various educational institutions and found out that most of them were concerned with the requirement of school building, road, and other school amenities but only a few of them were concerned with the cleanliness which is a basic need.

He, therefore, urged the teachers, the parents and the public to have a holistic approach and collective responsibilities of all stakeholders to have a clean, hygienic and healthy atmosphere not just in schools but in the society as well.

Meanwhile, the president of Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong, Dr. Judita Syiemlieh in her speech on the occasion informed that the Rotary Club is an international organization which focuses on various issues in the society including literacy mission, acknowledging teachers for their great services, teacher training, providing safe drinking water, toilets and washing areas to the student, providing a safe environment and well-maintained school buildings and compound.

Besides the students and teachers, the inaugural function here was also attended by the general secretary of Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong, Antony War Nongbri, Sr. Mary Lamare, Headmistress of Auxillium Umpohliew Jingstad Secondary School and others.
