Attempt to illegally constitute SMC alleged
TURA: The Tura DSEO along with the Principal of Rajabala Deficit Higher Secondary School has been accused of making illegal attempts to constitute the said school’s Managing Committee even as the matter is sub-judiced and pending in the Meghalaya High Court. Samsul Hoque, a resident of Rajabala who made the allegation said that the matter is of genuine concern to the people of the area and needs to be brought to the notice of the HC and the public at large. “They are making all sorts of attempts to constitute the SMC illegally. This is in complete violation of the norms and procedure of law and an act of defiance against HC,” Hoque said.

Unclaimed vehicles should be removed from PWD roads: TMB
TURA: The Tura Municipal Board (TMB) has issued a notification directing all owners of junk/abandoned vehicles lying on PWD roadsides within the Tura municipality area to remove them by November 12. The effort is being made by the West Garo Hills district administration to decongest roads and prevent health hazards for which, cooperation has been sought from all concerned. The notification warned that non-compliance of the order after the expiry of the given time period will lead to all unclaimed vehicles being removed or towed to the junk yard and no claims will be entertained after that.
15-year-old boy missing
SHILLONG: Family members of Ankit Rai (15 years) reported that he went missing from their residence on October 26 from SIB Residential Complex, Kenches Trace, Laban. He is a class IX student of Dainty Buds School, Bishnupur. Informers will be rewarded Rs 10,000. People who have any information can contact 9862205508/7005747097.

Filmmakers plea against piracy
SHILLONG: Meghalaya film makers have voiced their concern over piracy issues and urged the public not to indulge in piracy. Addressing the press on Wednesday, director of Onaatah, which is also streaming on Netflix, Pradip Kurbah said he caught some people selling pirated CDs and DVDs of Onaatah. He informed that he let the culprits off with a warning but threatened to file an FIR if he encounters it the second time. “The Khasi film industry will suffer losses. Piracy is a cancer for the film industry. Awareness for piracy is important,” he said.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas observed
NONGSTOIN/Shillong: Along with the rest of the country Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) and Rastriya Sankalp Diwas  to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sadar Vallabhai Patel was observed in West Khasi Hills district at the DC office, Conference Hall Nongstoin on Wednesday where the DC T.Lyngwa took the lead in pledge reading. It was also attended by the SP G.D.Kharwanlang, ADCs, ADM, SDO Civil of Mawshynrut Civil Sub-Division K.L.Nongbri  and Mairang Civil Sub-Division A.Nongbri ,BDOs and district heads. The Border Security Force also organised a series of events at the Frontier Headquarters of Umpling, Sector Headquarters Mawpat and Dobasipara on Wednesday to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The programme in Mawpat started with BSF personnel taking oath by sentinels of border. All the troops on duty also took pledge to work for the unity of the nation and the pledge was presided by L Mohanti, IPS Inspector General Meghalaya. U K Nayal, DIG/PRO lauded the hardship of jawans. Similar events were held at other stations of BSF battalions in the state.

Run for unity marathon in Jowai
JOWAI: The Office of the West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Jowai organised a mini marathon in Jowai with the theme ‘Run for Unity’. The marathon was organised on Wednesday to mark the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Students from various schools in West Jaintia Hills participated in the marathon. It was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills LSN Garod Dykes.

Science Congress concluded
Shillong: The two-day State-level Congress of the 26th National Children’s Science Congress-2018 concluded on Wednesday. Eight best projects were selected for the National level Congress to be held at SOA University, Bhubaneswar, Orissa from December 27-31. The projects selected were from Shillong Public School, Shillong; Anderson Higher Secondary School, Nongstoin; James Memorial, Umbir; Jingiaseng Kynthei Mawkyrwat Presbytery Secondary School, Mawkyrwat; Seng Khasi Higher Secondary School, Jaiaw; Alpha Higher Secondary School, Nongpoh; Govt. UPS & RMSA Secondary School, Mawkaiaw. Two best projects i.e those from Shillong Public School and Seng Khasi Hr. Sec. School have also been selected to represent the state in the forth-coming “Indian Science Congress Session” to be held at Hissar, Haryana. Altogether 42 projects were presented during the two-day programme representing all seven districts of the State.

Awareness on human rights
JOWAI: Chairperson of Meghalaya Human Rights Commission, Dr. Justice Aftab H. Saikia on Wednesday attended the awareness programme on Human Rights conducted for students under Amlarem Civil Sub-Division at Syiem Higher Secondary School, Amlarem. It was organised by Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) in collaboration with the office of the Amalarem Civil Sub Division, Amlarem. ‘Our constitution is one of the best in the world as it enshrines the right of every individual irrespective of caste creed and religion’ said Dr. Justice Aftab Saikia. Former Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) and member of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) P.J P Hanaman through a power point presentation informed the students the meaning of human rights, functions of MHRC its salient features and the basic rights relating to life, liberty, equality and dignity. Criminals’ procedures rules and procedures to be followed by the police while performing their duties was also explained.
