Killing condemned
SHILLONG: Shillong Shreehatta Sammilanee ( SSS) in its Bijoya Sammelan Cultural Function held on Sunday at Assam Sonthan Dharmasabha Auditorium, Laitumkhrah, adopted a resolution on the recent killing of five innocent people by unknown gunmen on November 1 at Bishonimukh Village, Dhola in Tinsukia District of Assam.

EGH achieves 91pc MRV
TURA: The Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign (MRVC) in East Garo Hills has achieved a stunning 91% as on October 31 as 55,784 beneficiaries have received vaccination out of the total target of 61,378. This was informed by District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO), East Garo Hills Janulla K Marak during a meeting held on Friday with the Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign (MRVC) and the District Task Force Committee (DTFC) under the chairmanship the Deputy Commissioner L Ch Marak. The meeting focused on assessing and reviewing the performance of the on-going vaccination campaign in the district and the DM&HO is hopeful of achieving a full 100% before the campaign ends. According to the DM&HO, the campaign has come across refusal pockets in some areas on religious grounds. In this regard the administration has sought the cooperation and support of all religious leaders and citizens to make the campaign successful.

Pius to meet PWD officials over broken SWKH roads
SHILLONG: Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein inspected the roads at Warsanlyngdoh in South West Khasi Hills recently and observed that the area needed development. Warsanlyngdoh had been neglected for years causing inconvenience to the residents of Wahkaji, Pyndenumjarain, Nongtynniaw and Mawphanrang. Marwein, along with SDO PWD Ranikor B Dkhar, visited the area on October 29-30. Leaders of UDP Ranikor circle were also present during the inspection along with village leaders and residents of Warsanlyngdoh. “This region is in desperate need of development, especially the roads which are the backbone of development,” said Marwein. The legislator added that he would try to meet PWD officials and discuss on how to improve the roads in places such as Mawjai, Nongummer, Nongrynniang and Umsaw. Marwein also informed the gathering that after becoming the MLA, he had tried to improve the condition of the 12km road from Wahkaji to Mawphanrang.

Man dies after being struck with hammer
NONGSTOIN: In an unfortunate incident which occured at Sangshong village in Mairang, Jaianstar Kharmawlong (41) succumbed to his injuries after he was assaulted by Dilip Kharmawlong (38) on Friday around 3:00pm. According to reliable sources, the incident happened while they were working at Mawlong after the accused had struck Jaianstar with a hammer. The victim was taken to Tirot Sing Memorial Hospital, Mairang where he was later referred to NEIGHRIMS. However, Jaianstar succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning. The father of the victim identified as Devendro Nongsiej filed an FIR at Mairang PS against Dilip following which the Mairang Police registered a case against the accused. Meanwhile, Dilip Kharmawlong (38) has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

Newly constructed lane at Oxford Hill inaugurated
SHILLONG: Laban-Mawprem MDC, Ricky Shullai on Saturday inaugurated the newly constructed lane at Oxford Hill which had otherwise turned into a garbage dumping ground and a haven for illegal activities. The MDC inaugurated the lane in the presence of the headman of Kench’s Trace, Oxford and Rilbong (KOR) DS Mawlong and members of the Dorbar Shnong KOR, Seng Samla. “As the MDC of the constituency, it is my duty to look after these narrow roads in the localities within my jurisdiction and ensure that they are clean,” Shullai said. He also stated that he had earlier received complaints from the members of the Dorbar and the people of the locality that the lane had turned into a garbage dump and a haven for all kinds of illicit activities posing a threat to the safety of the residents and passersby. He further urged the people to avoid littering and to keep the roads and public areas clean.

Grade IV employees submit memo to CM
TURA: Grade IV government employees from Garo Hills under the banner of the Garo Hills Grade IV Association have submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma urging him to review  various issues plaguing the employees. One of the demands stated in the memorandum is the immediate release of the remaining 60% of arrears to all employees instead of regular installments. The association also appealed to the government to reinstate ‘appointment on compassionate grounds’ to the families of those who have died during service while it was still in existence. The association also sought the enhancement of house rent, medical and hills allowances as well as the regularization of their services based on the duration of their services.

Body recovered in WKH
NONGSTOIN: The dead body of 36-year-old Sotarius Syiem of Mawroh village was recovered by the residents of Nongshillong in West Khasi Hills on Sunday around 11:54am. After discovering the body in a paddy field near the Block Development Office in Nongshillong village, the headman of Mawroh reported the incident to the police who sent out an inquiry team to the spot. Police have ruled out foul play as relatives of the deceased informed that Syiem was an alcoholic and had gone out to the paddy field on Friday evening to catch grasshoppers but never returned.

Trucks detained for NGT violation
NONGSTOIN: Two were detained for illegally transporting coal on Sunday morning. The trucks (ML2271 and ML05J 3698) were driven by Edibros Kharbani (28) and Albestar Kharbani (30) of Klangrin village. Police have also arrested handymen Shanbor Mawlieh (22) and Fastarwell Mawlieh (21) of Thiepjaphlang village in West Khasi Hills. The trucks are being kept at Mawiaban police compound. Meanwhile, West Khasi Hills Police detected two trucks at Mawroh village suspected of transporting coal around 3:00pm on the same day. The trucks (ML 05R 8288 and ML05R -3183) were driven by Jeremaiah Kharkongor (26) of Niriang, Jowai and Rajesh Dkhar (25) of Puriang, Mawryngkneng. However, the handymen of the trucks managed to escape.

Rymbai village gets Dorbar office
JOWAI:  The newly constructed office of Rymbai village Dorbar was inaugurated on Saturday by local MDC, Violet Lyngdoh in the presence of the JHADC chief executive member, MB Rymbai besides other MDCs and elders of the village. According to the village Secretary, Blasius Rymbai, the office building which was constructed for approximately Rs 20 lakh, was allotted to the village Dorbar by the office of the JHADC through the local MDC. “The office will benefit the village authority and the villagers. In the past, official documents of the village was kept either in the house of the headman or the secretary.
