SHILLONG: The special committee of the office bearers of Sohra UDP MDC constituency is gearing preparations for the 2019 Council elections by trying to strengthen the party’s hold in Sohra.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, UDP candidate from Sohra and former Sohra MLA, Titos Chyne said, “The special committee of UDP Sohra held a meeting to discuss on the issues concerning Sohra.”

Besides endorsing the demand for formation of Sohra district with headquarter at Sohra, the committee decided to meet the chairman of Mawmluh Cherra Corporation Limited (MCCL) and also Shella MLA, Donkupar Roy over the slow progress of work of the MCCL.

With Sohra constituency mostly depending on coal, limestone etc., Chyne said the government should come up with a mining policy at the earliest.

With Sohra mostly known for attracting large number of tourists due to its scenic beauty, he said the committee would meet the Tourism Minister with an appeal to further boost tourism in Sohra.

Referring to the National Games 2022 to be hosted by the state, he said, “Sohra should have an indoor and an outdoor stadium so that national games are held here also.”

Further, he said a sub-divisional sport officer at Sohra should be appointed to uplift sports in the constituency.
