GUWAHATI: A woman in her mid-forties and a 28-year-old man was found hanging in separate places in the Uzan Bazar riverside locality here, police confirmed on Thursday.

Jharna Choudhury Bishaya (46) was found hanging in her bedroom of her residential quarter on the Railway Colony premises around midnight on Wednesday while Bishal Hazarika, also a resident of the locality, was also recovered in a similar state inside the Sati Radhika Park overlooking the Brahmaputra River on Thursday morning.

The park is located about 200-300 metres away from the residence of Jharna, whose husband Dinesh Bishaya, a railway employee, was on night duty at the time of the incident, police sources said.

Police have filed two cases after family members of the woman and the youth lodged FIRs at Latasil police station.

Residents who are otherwise tightlipped on the matter have reportedly said that the duo might have known each other. However, police are yet to ascertain what led the duo take the “extreme step”.

“We are investigating the cases to ascertain what happened and led to their deaths. Post mortem has been conducted at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital today and till the report comes out in about 15 days, we cannot say anything,” a police source at Latasil police station told The Shillong Times on Thursday.
