GUWAHATI: A leopard which was on the prowl in and around the IIT-Guwahati campus in north Guwahati since Friday was finally caged by forest authorities on the early hours Monday with the trap – a goat tied to the cage – working to perfection.
Sources said that security guards deployed outside the institute director’s official residence had traced the leopard following which a team from the forest department arrived at the campus with a cage to trap the animal.
A carcass of porcupine was also found near the director’s residence.
“The leopard was finally caught this morning and a team from the Assam State Zoo came to the IIT campus to take the caged animal to the zoo in Guwahati. The leopard would be about six to seven years old and is in a healthy state,” an official told the media.
A tense situation was created as the news of the leopard prowling in and around the IIT campus spread on Friday.
A number of people had gathered at the IIT campus to catch a glimpse of the caged leopard.
Sources say that there is a suspicion more leopards could have strayed into the vicinity of the institute.
