SHILLONG: The BSF troops deployed at Jatrakona, South Garo Hills district, apprehended one Indian drug smuggler along with the driver of three wheeler vehicle and seized 994 yaba tablets worth more than Rs. 3.5 lakh on Tuesday.
A BSF statement said the special ambush party observed a suspected three wheeler (ML-08 F-7148) coming from Baghmara side and going towards Dalu.
Ambush party stopped the auto and apprehended two persons namely Ratan Saha (30) and Sarat Mahanta (29) both from Chaipani (Babupara) under Dalu, West West Garo Hills.
On search, the BSF recovered 994 yaba tablets, one mobile and Rs. 14,520 from their possession.
Ratan revealed that seized tablets were to be handed over to Litan(35) from Palpara(Kilapara) under Dalu .
He also revealed that he had collected the consignment from one Muktar Ali at Baghmara.
Yaba tablets are mostly consumed by the youth of Bangladesh. These red-coloured pills are bought in bulk at Rs.350 per pill in the border areas. After transferring through several hands, it is sold to end-users in Bangladesh at Tk 800 to 900 per pill, the BSF said.
The BSF added that the demand for this type of tablet is on the rise due to the addiction of users in Bangladesh.
“Further questioning of apprehended persons may help to expose other members of the syndicate on both sides of the border”, the BSF said.
