Former Assam minister no more

GUWAHATI: Former Assam minister and senior Congress leader Chandan Kumar Sarkar breathed his last at Bongaigaon in the wee hours of Monday. He was 65.

A former irrigation minister in the erstwhile Tarun Gogoi government, Sarkar was admitted to the Lower Assam Hospital in Bongaigaon following a heart attack on Sunday night.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) expressed dismay at the sudden demise of the veteran leader.

In a condolence message to the bereaved family members of the South Abhayapuri MLA, APCC president Ripun Bora expressed dismay at his sudden death.

“The news comes as a shock to us because I was in touch with him yesterday and we had discussed about the upcoming the Panchayat polls in the state. He was a proactive leader who played a significant role during the Assam Agitation,” Bora told a section of the media.

Several other party leaders, including former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, leader of the Oposition in Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia offered their condolences.

Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also offered his condolences to the bereaved family members of the senior Congressman.

Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, while offering his condolences, said that late Sarkar worked with commitment and dedication for welfare of the people and made significant contributions to the political and social life of the state.

“As a minister of the previous Congress Government, late Sarkar rendered valuable services, which would always be remembered by the people, Sonowal said adding that his death was an irreparable loss to the society,”, Sonowal said in his condolence message.
