NONGSTOIN: Urban Minister Hamletson Dohling said the dispute in the border area in West Khasi Hills has been going on for 46 years and could not be solved within a short span of time.
The minister, during a visit to Langpih on Friday, maintained that the people residing in adjoining areas bordering Assam need to be protected and secured.
During his visit to Langpih, a meeting was organised at Raidmynsaw UP School, where hundreds of people appealed the minister to bring development in the area for the betterment of the border residents. Beside Dohling, other officials namely Hindro Samakha, Syiem of Nongmynsaw P.Syiem, NGOs and headmen also attended the meeting.
The local headmen of the area have expressed their concern over the problems face by the locals of Langpih over the disputed boundary and development where the status quo between the two states does not stand to take development initiatives.
Related to the development in border areas the minister said that based from the status quo the government of both Meghalaya and Assam can bring development in those villages. Dohling said that as per the demand of the NGOs and the locals the Police camp should be upgraded in to a Police Outpost and he assured that he will take the matter to the Home Minister.
