Seven temples looted overnight in Assam
Guwahati: In a series of thefts on Friday night, at least seven temples were targeted by thieves in Assam, looting away centuries-old idols and cash, among other valuables. The centuries-old Siddheswar Devalaya in Sualkuchi in Kamrup (rural) district was targeted by thieves for the third time last night. The thieves took away two antique idols and other valuables from the temple. The temple authorities said similar burglaries had taken place in the temple twice earlier, but police had been unable to nab the culprits or recover the stolen items. In main city Guwahati, as many as five temples in close vicinity in Maligaon area were looted on Friday night.The thieves looted cash from donation boxes and other valuable items. In yet another similar theft, a temple in Ranthali in Nagaon district was targeted by burglars, who took away idols and other valuable items. (UNI)
Committee formed for pay hike of ministers, MLAs of Tripura
Agartala: The Speaker of Tripura assembly on Friday constituted a committee to review the existing salary, pension and other benefits for Chief Minister, Ministers and members of the Legislative Assembly and to propose further hike if needed. The committee is headed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath and Tribal Welfare Minister Mever Kumar Jamatia, Govt Chief Whip Kalyani Roy and MLAs Ratan Chakraborty, Asish Kumar Saha, Sudhanshu Das, Tapan Chakraborty, Sahid Chowdhury and Sudhan Das were included in the panel. The committee will sit to review the issue and submit a report before the government for final decision. (UNI)
Tripura University VC awarded for life time contribution
Agartala: The leading media houses and organisations awarded Vice Chancellor of Tripura University and renowned media academic Prof V L Dharurkar with prestigious Media Educator Award for life time achievement and contribution in the field of Mass Communication and Journalism last week in New Delhi. As part of Media and Media Education Summit, the award was given to Vice Chancellors of Raipur University M S Parmar and Bhuj University Dr Sonalkar along with Prof Dharurkar following recommendation of an independent jury. While addressing the gathering Prof Dharurkar stressed on the need of Indianisation of media and to develop Indian media theories considering unique heritage, culture and tradition of the country. He pointed out that there have several researches on development of Indian media but still could not able to profess own theory and model. ‘‘The functioning of media at grassroot level and contribution of micro media in opinion building and influencing public policies in India is not like America or Europe. Unfortunately, India media world could not give the colonial hang over in media education, which is most important for our inclusive development,’’ Prof Dharurkar said. He further mentioned that Indian media industry and profession is mature enough to set it’s own style, functional models and management strategies for future development. (UNI)
Chartered Accountants conference concludes
GUWAHATI: The two day National Conference of Chartered Accountants which was inaugurated on Friday at Pragjyoti ITA Centre for Performing Arts, Guwahati was successfully concluded on Saturday evening. The mega conference “Vivechana-Exploring the future”, on its second day hosted two technical sessions, one on corporate laws and accounting standards on small and medium enterprises and the other on GST. CA. P R Ramesh from Bengaluru and CA Manoj Fadnis from Indore spoke at the first session. The last technical session on GST Audit and Annual Return being the most current and important topic saw a lot of enthusiasm and was deliberated in detail by CA Jatin Christopher from Bengaluru and CA Ashu Dalmia from Delhi. Detailed discussion on reconciliations and mismatches while preparing annual return and doing the annual GST audit and concerns of the profession in fulfilling the requirements of this audit were discussed.
