Unidentified gunmen open fire on vehicle carrying JD(U) leader
Srinagar: Unidentified gunmen Wednesday opened fire on a vehicle carrying a Janata Dal (United) leader in Lal Bazaar area of the city, police said. “As reported by one Sajad Mirza (political worker), some unknown gunmen fired pistol shots on his vehicle when he was going to his father’s residence in Madin Sahib area,” a police official said. The official said Mirza’s personal security officers retaliated, forcing the assailants to flee. There was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the incident, he added. The official said a police party has rushed to the spot and started investigations in the matter. (PTI)
1984 anti-Sikh riots: Delhi HC upholds conviction of 80 people
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday upheld the conviction of around 80 people and awarded five year jail term in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. The high court dismissed their appeals against the conviction by a trial court for burning houses and curfew violations during the riots. Justice R K Gauba directed all the convicts to surrender within four weeks. The convicts had challenged the August 27, 1996 judgement of a Sessions Court which had convicted 88 out of the 107 people arrested on November 2, 1984 for rioting, burning houses and curfew violation in Trilokpuri area of East Delhi. Girl dies after collapsing during dance performance
Mumbai: A 12-year-old girl died after she collapsed on stage during a dance competition in suburban Kandivli in Mumbai, the police said Wednesday. The girl, identified as Manisha Sharma, collapsed in the middle of a performance on Tuesday night, a Kandivli police station official said. She was rushed to a suburban hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival, he said. The cause of her death will be known after postmortem, the official said. A case of accidental death case has been registered by the police, the official added. (PTI)
