NPP picks Nongstoin candidate

NONGSTOIN: The National People’s Party West Khasi Hills under the leadership of Macmillan Byrsat, MLA Nongstoin as president has named Apsharailang Syiem as the candidate from Nongstoin Constituency during a meeting on Saturday at Bishop Hall, Nongstoin. The MLA added that the final decision will be taken by the party at the state level.
Syiem held the post of the secretary to the Hima Nongstoin Syiemship and a secretary of Hima Nongstoin Land Owners Coal Traders and Producers Association.
Besides Byrsat, Syiem was also one of the main persons who fought against the NGT ban on coal mining in Meghalaya and is also involved in other social activities.
During the meeting, leaders and members of Nongstoin Block, Primary Unit, Youth wing and Women Wing unanimously chose Syiem to be a prominent candidate.
Having a Master’s degree, Syiem’s involvement with social activities started during his school days and held the post of Relief and Rehabilitation Secretary of WYWO, general secretary KSU Nongstoin Circle at the time when Paul Lyngdoh was the union president, beside others. Syiem expressed gratitude to the members and leaders of NPP for choosing him and urged the people to be united saying, ‘Let’s build a strong wall to protect the people of Nongstoin as the we have been neglected for too long’.
At the meet, Byrsat said NPP had created a special committee with 25 members and the same committee decided his ticket during the last Assembly Election and will also decide on the candidate for this council election.
He added that he will bring the decision to the state level, so that the election committee could give their consent.
