Jhalupara residents face water woes
SHILLONG: Residents of Jhalupara, which is under Shillong Cantonment Board, is bearing the brunt of shortage of water for the past three to four weeks. Residents say that water is being supplied in the morning for a maximum of 25 to 30 minutes while there is no supply at all in the evening. Many residents fear that they will have no other option but to buy water if the situation persists. When contacted, officials from the Shillong Cantonment Board said that they suspect leakage in some places as the pipelines are long, old and underground. “We are conducting a check to find out where is the fault”, officials from SMB said. The official also denied allegations that water is being supplied only for 20-25 minutes in the morning saying it is being supplied for one hour.
BSF destroys illegal hemp cultivation in South Garo Hills
SHILLONG : In a joint operation carried out by troops of 26 Bn BSF under the supervision of Additional Magistrate of South West Garo Hills BD Sangma, SI Selestine Ch Momin and officials of the DC Office in Ampati, approximately 2500-2600 hemp plants in 32 patches of land have been destroyed at Kuligaon village in Mahenderganj in South Garo Hills. The land owners in question have all been identified as residents of Kuligaon, Bilpara and Dakskhipara Khatapara. Meanwhile, the Addl. Magistrate informed that the remaining hemp will be destroyed after a discussion with the DC of Ampati.
Challan for limestone misused
SHILLONG: Challans for transporting limestone issued from Lumshnong-Saipung in East Jaintia Hills are being allegedly misused. There are allegations that the limestone is not loaded from Lumshnong-Saipung though the challan is from the area. Instead, it is loaded from Nongtalang in West Jaintia Hills. A source told The Shillong Times that even the forest personnel stationed at Amsarim weighbridge were unaware of the illegal development. “If this is the case, then there is no need for mining as the challan can be obtained from anywhere,” the source said.
National conference on entrepreneurship begins
SHILLONG: Entrepreneurship acts as a spark plug in an economy, activating and stimulating economic activities and the social life around it. It contributes to society by creating wealth, enriching life and challenging the conventions. In this context, a three-day national conference was inaugurated at St Anthony’s College here on Thursday which will deliberate on these challenges. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui. Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Rymbui said the conference was important for young entrepreneurs as today it is impossible to live without entrepreneurship, innovation and society. He added that unemployment has become a huge problem and students themselves will have to innovate employment opportunities. Asserting that every student has a hidden potential, Rymbui said the conference will be a great opportunity for an individual to look for his hidden potential and become a successful entrepreneur and create more employment for others.
NEPA passing out parade today
SHILLONG: After 49 weeks of rigorous training, 19 trainees of the 44th batch basic course and 34 trainees of the 45th batch will pass out from North Eastern Police Academy on Friday. Aftab Ahmad Ali, IPS (retd), the first director of the Academy will review the parade. An IPS officer of the 1955 batch, Ali was in the Madhya Pradesh cadre. Besides various postings in the cadre, he has served as assistant director in the National Police Academy and DIG in BSF, Shillong. He was chosen to be the first commandant of NEPA 40 years ago in 1978 and served as commandant till 1984 when he returned to his cadre and was posted as Inspector General Jabalpur. NEPA, which started with a limited number of courses in 1978, is now training nearly 1,700 candidates per year.
Events organised in aid of Chokpot Degree College
TURA: In a bid to raise funds for the Chokpot Degree College, various events like marathon, fishing competition and food fest was organised by the college’s governing body at Nokil Wari, Warima of Chokpot in South Garo Hills on Wednesday. The college which till now is yet to see the light of day aims to cater to those students from the area who cannot afford to come to Tura or elsewhere to pursue their higher studies due to their economic background. South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, H B Marak who was the Chief Guest lauded the efforts of the governing body for initiating such a noble initiative adding that setting up of a college in this part of the district is necessary in order to improve the education scenario in the area. He encouraged the people of to support the noble cause and assist in whatever capacity they can for setting up this college in the region. A calendar meant for raising funds of the college was also released. Chokpot SDO, Dolrich G Momin, Chokpot Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and other district officials were also present.
Garo bands rock audience at NH51 fest
SHILLONG: NH51 Garo Hills Rock festival concluded recently with popular bands performing on the last day of the festival. Wrathbefall, Rich Rocker Goera Olma Wal.Srip, Eye2eye, Suicide Notes enthralled the crowd on the concluding day with their hit numbers. However, Rough Road and Ultimate Page were unable to perform. Hundreds of tourists from other parts of the country congratulated Arma who organised the event. The organisers showed their gratitude to all the rock bands of the state and the volunteers for their enthusiast participation.
