SHILLONG: The state government, after four years, has decided to revise the minimum wages for different categories of workers.
Under the revised wages, unskilled workers will be paid Rs 300 per day, semi-skilled workers will get Rs 340, skilled workers will get Rs 380 and highly skilled workers will get Rs 420 a day.
The new revised wages have been in effect since October 1, 2018.
It also brought about major amendments in the Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Welfare Building Bill, 1996.
Speaking to media persons on Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the Cabinet has asked the Labour Department to bring the amendments in the form of an ordinance.
According to Tynsong, the government would be able to enhance the authority of the Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board with the amendment.
The Cabinet also amended the Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Workers Rules, 2008.
Tynsong informed that earlier workers got Rs 5,000 as loan but the government now feels that the amount should be given as a ‘one-time grant’ for procurement of tools. The government also decided that workers will be entitled for a monthly stipend and a clause for one-time book and uniform grant has been added.
Tynsong concluded by stating that “there are not less than 42,000 or 43,000 registered workers in the state and the rules will be applicable to both private and government workers”.
