MAWKYRWAT: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has raised concerns over hygiene and sanitation at Photkroh market in South West Khasi Hills.
The general secretary of FKJGP in the district, Balse Kharbani, pointed out that there are no dustbins or public toilets in the market area and this may affect the health of people.
“I am surprised to know that till now Photkroh, which is one of the oldest border markets in the district, do not even have a public toilet or a dustbin. Garbage is dumped on the road side. This will pose a great threat to the health and welfare of people living in and around the market,” Kharbani said before starting a cleaning drive in the market on Thursday.
Kharbani blamed the Market Development Committee for not looking after the welfare of people. He said the federation will meet the Chief of Hima Maharam to discuss about the need for public toilets, dustbins and maintaining cleanliness. The meeting was also attended by the headman of Photkroh village, Tiewlang Lyngkhoi, who hailed FKJGP’s initiative to conduct the cleaning drive.
After the meeting, members of FKJGP Panchiring and Photkroh units took part in the cleaning drive. The FKJGP also donated dustbins.
