Illegal mining continues, 6 arrested

SHILLONG: The crackdown of the state government on illegal coal mining activities continues in the state with the arrest of several laborers in violation of NGT order in West Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills.
On January 9, police conducted a check on illegal coal mining and apprehended three persons, Nar Bahadur Chubba (27), Sane Momin (35) and Anton Ch Marak (37) while they were extracting coal at Senengkhri area in West Khasi Hills. On the same day, police conducted a check in the same area and apprehended three persons, Nar Mozid Ali (39), Abdul Rashid (28) and Abdul Baten (38).
Earlier on January 8 around 4.30 pm, police detained one Bolero pick-up vehicle without registration number from an illegal stone quarry belonging to one Sona Miah at Pipulbari in West Garo Hills. On seeing this, the owner along with Josijol Haque, Rijul Kasim and ten others, ‘gheraoed’ and pelted stone at the police personnel.
As a result, two police personnel N. Mahmud and M. Kumar sustained injuries and one government vehicle (ML02 6504) was damaged.
