Army honours martyrs on Veterans’ Day

SHILLONG: The 3rd Tri Services Armed Forces Veterans’ Day was celebrated at 58 Gorkha Training Centre in Happy Valley under the aegis of HQ 101 Area on Monday.
The function was attended by around 400 veterans and veer naris hailing from Meghalaya. It is an annual tri-services event with the objective of honouring the veterans and widows and to resolve issues related to their pension and healthcare.
Veterans’ Day commemorates the day on which the first Field Marshall General KM Cariappa retired from service.
The event commenced with wreath laying ceremony at 58 Gorkha Training Centre War Memorial.
Apart from dignitaries, wreaths were laid by parents of Late Capt Clifford Nongrum, Maha Vir Chakra and Late Major David Manlun and Kirti Chakra Major General PK Saini.
A number of stalls were put up by welfare agencies of the army along with medical camp with specialists to provide free medical check-up and medicines.
The event concluded with entertainment programme.
