GUWAHATI: A national association of iron and steel manufacturers was launched here on Friday with an objective to increase the consumption of steel in the country and take up with the government issues such as raw material availability, environmental clearance and research.

One of the primary objectives of the association, Indian Iron and Steel Federation, would also be to counter “misinformation” about the industry players in an alleged bid to “malign Indian steel producers”.

There have been reports of 26 TMT bar brands failing to meet quality parameters during sample tests. The Union steel ministry has said it would examine the matter even as it has discarded the allegation.

“The ministry will examine the matter. While inspecting, we find the products are meeting the Bureau of Indian Standards norms. Therefore, the entire lot should be of that quality,” Union steel minister, Chaudhary Birender Singh told the media recently.
