Cracks in Opposition unity

Editor,

Cracks appear in united Opposition over PM face for 2019 polls. On 19th January 2019 over 20 Opposition parties may have gotten together at a rally in Kolkata Brigade ground to project unity, but the issue of prime ministerial candidate remains a sticky one as various parties are pitting their own leaders for the coveted post. While Congress is pushing for Rahul Gandhi, BSP wants Mayawati. Congress’ PL Punia asserted that people’s hopes and their confidence rest on Rahul for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and he will form the government.

Meanwhile, BSP’s Sudhindra Bhadoria projected Mayawati as the next head of the state, asserting that she will make efforts to uplift the poor, scheduled castes, Muslims and women in society. Such projection from member of a party which did not support ‘Triple Talaq Bill’ for the cause of women on the floor of the Rajya Sabha is not only delusive, particularly for their pseudo concerns for Muslims and women, but also divisive and non-pluralistic and exposes merely a biased discriminatory appeasement policy. In a congregation where everybody is a leader, everybody is a worker and everybody is an organizer it would be difficult to arrive at a consensus simply because everybody is likely to press for his/her candidature as has been seen in the past. There is every possibility of a falling apart proving the adage of, “too many cooks spoil the broth” true once again.

In fact the congregation was a Mahagathbandhan of some of the frustrated and almost forgotten leaders of insignificant political relevance. But most of them are dynastic draculas promoting close relatives and gifting political posts to them for familial development only. Sharad Power was the proponent of conferring the tag of ‘foreigner’ on Ms Sonia Gandhi’ and then formed NCP with what objective is not clear even today.. Thr fodder-scam decorated (having siphoned off six treasuries of erstwhile Bihar) Lalu’s son Tejaswi Yadav (read up to Class XII &  IRCTC scam tainted) represented RJD in the conclave for obvious reasons. Birds of a feather flock together. Leaders of the country, frustrated and having lost relevance and having criminal nexus, who are promoters of dynastic domination in national politics can never be relied upon and expected to render services to the nation for the cause of people and developmental progress. Otherwise also no dynasty is a production-oriented factory/workshop/plant having a standard cycle or line of production wherein you make inputs of raw material and obtain a high quality leader at the end of the production line as output. Einstein’s son could not be an Einstein, nor could Winston Churchill’s son be another Churchill.

MP elections at hand

Editor,

Elections to the Lok Sabha are nearing and various political parties would be resorting to a sort of pilgrimage to various places and localities. Having said that, an MP is supposed to be the voice of the entire state and the people who voted, but of late the sitting MP Vincent Pala has not been up to the mark as a representative of the people. He is the voice of those with business interests. Much is left to be desired from the Congress MP in terms of his performance for the state. An MP has to be approachable and has to put the interests of his community and state always ahead. The UDP candidate stands a strong chance considering his understanding of state issues and it’s needs. Let’s hope the current hullabaloo about who’s in and who’s out of the Lok Sabha race will die down sooner than later.

Yours etc..

MeECL violating safety concerns

Editor,

That human life is cheap in our country, is a well established axiom of our lives. However, the callous disregard for safety I witnessed at the transformer situated behind Madan Iewrynghep (Fire Brigade) would shock even the most seasoned citizen. The transformer is situated at road level and is supposed to be gated and not accessible to the public. I say “supposed to”, because to my horror this morning, I saw the gate wide open with small children playing near it. After shooing off the children and telling them not to go near the area, I immediately went to the MeECL office at Jingkieng, Nongthymmai to report the matter. The person I met there very kindly heard my complaint, but expressed his inability to do anything. He told me that they do in fact close the gate and tie it up with wire, but the tea vendors from the complex opposite the gate, cut open the wire so they can relieve themselves within the transformer area!! Apparently, a link chain and proper lock is unsuitable for the purpose of keeping out trespassers (it is hard to express sarcasm in prose, so please forgive me). It is therefore through your esteemed newspaper, that I would like to draw the attention of the authorities including the office of the Dorbar Shnong of that respective area, to act before yet another avoidable tragedy strikes due to negligence.

Yours etc.,
