Ex-minister Martle Mukhim files nomination to contest district council polls

SHILLONG: The oldest candidate in the District Council elections and yet looking all fired up in comparison to the young candidates, filed the nomination papers on Wednesday.

Former MLA and MDC, Martle Mukhim who is 69 years old, will be contesting from Mawkynrew constituency on Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) ticket.

Cabinet Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh’s wife, Amanda Pakyntein will also be contesting from the constituency from People’s Democratic Front (PDF).

Mukhim who was a former minister of the state reminisced the days when the District Council was still strong and bemoaned its declining power.

According to him, the traditional institutions such as that of the Syiem, Sordar and Raid had to be strengthened and said, “Our people need protection from outsiders.”
