Guv gives aid to sick SOS boy
Shillong: Governor of Meghalaya Tathagata Roy personally handed over a cheque of Rs. 3,50,000 on Tuesday to Elizabeth Mawkhlieng, Senior Youth Co- worker SOS Children’s Village, Umiam, Ri-Bhoi for the treatment of 14-year-old boy Heimon U-ru Mukhim for surgical intervention to correct sideward curvature of spine. The assistance has been provided from Discretionary Grant of Governor. The Governor is scheduled to visit SOS Children’s Village, Umiam in June, for SOS Day. The treatment will be done at NEIGRIHMS. He also enquired about the well-being of the boy and wished him speedy recovery.

CM to meet teacher’s body in March
SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has called the leaders of Joint Action Committee of All Teachers’ Association of Meghalaya (JACATAM) for talks in March. The discussion will be on pending demands of the JACATAM.Secretary of JACATAM, Kenneth Shadap said there will be discussions on upgrading adhoc schools to deficit system, regular salary for non-government aided schools, retirement benefits and others.

Dacoits loot family in West Garo Hills
TURA: Five persons, including three women, sustained injuries after an armed gang of dacoits raided their home and assaulted them on Monday night at remote Rongchandalgre village under Phulbari police station in West Garo Hills. The gang also looted 2.5 lakh rupees belonging to the family. The incident took place shortly after midnight with the gang taking advantage of the prevailing load. The head of the family, Rajen Marak and his son, Bikram Marak sustained serious injuries after the dacoits assaulted them with rods and sticks. The other three members of the family, all  women, identified as Silkame M Marak (daughter), Chengche M Marak and Samantha M Marak sustained minor injuries. Villagers, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the gang came in a black Scorpio vehicle and targeted Rajen Marak’s home located close to the main road of the village. It is strongly suspected that the gang, numbering 10-12 men, deliberately targetted Rajen as he had  sold his arecanut produce, valued at over three lakh rupees, just a few days back. “We are working on a few leads and are hopeful of a breakthrough in the case,” informed district police chief MGR Kumar.

Man gets ten years in jail for minor’s rape
SHILLONG: An accused in the rape of a minor girl identified as Klan Marbaniang was awarded ten years of rigorous imprisonment for the offence committed under section 6 of the POCSO Act 2012 on Tuesday. The order was passed by Noor Ain Khan , Special Judge (POCSO), East Khasi Hills. Further, the judge also recommended compensation of Rs three lakh to be paid to the victim by the state government.

Upgradation of Majai to Elaka opposed
SHILLONG: A delegation of residents falling under the jurisdiction of Hima Sohra opposed the demand of the Sordar Raid Majai to upgrade Majai to an Elaka. In this connection, the residents met Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) CEM HS Shylla who assured the delegation that the demand of the Sordar will not materialize. The delegation also sought information from the CEM as to the reason why KHADC took charge over Raid Majai. A representative of the delegation, W.Bynnud said that the charge is only temporary and said that the KHADC took charge of Raid Majai due to the increasing number of non-tribals there. He added that the CEM and others will visit Majai again on February 16.

MDC wants inquiry into road construction delay
TURA: GHADC MDC from Kharkutta, Smith Momin has sought a magisterial inquiry into the long delay in the construction of the local PMGSY road in North Garo Hills which was due to be completed by 2016. The project in question is the blacktopping of the TO4 (Majipara) to Tebrongpara PMGSY Road under Kharkutta C&RD Block which was sanctioned in the year 2014. In his complaint to the NGH Deputy Commissioner, Momin alleged negligence by the department concerned and the contractor in-charge of the project and sought action against both for delaying it. “The project was scheduled to be completed within two years from the date of sanction. This is gross slackness on the part of the PWD Department and the contractor concerned and action should be taken,” Momin said.While pointing out that the project is meant for the people and not for the benefit of vested interests sought the cancellation of the concerned contractor’s license for violating the norms of the PWD Department. He made an appeal to the DC to look into the matter and has also requested that the inquiry is completed within two weeks.

Lazy lifestyle leads to diseases: West Garo Hills DC 
TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh on Monday attributed diseases like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, liver and heart diseases etc. to sedentary lives, lack of physical activities and unhealthy food habits. He said this while speaking as the Chief Guest in Rashtriya Kishor Swastha Karyakaram (RKSK), organized by the District Medical & Health Officer, West Garo Hills, Tura, to mark the completion of five years of RKSK in the state at Chandmari playground. Stressing on the need for a disciplined and healthy life habits, the Deputy Commissioner said owning umpteen  fleets of vehicles doesn’t necessarily add to one’s status in the society; but it is the quality and simplicity in terms of moral and values that matters the most. He lauded the efforts of the medical department in terms of health camps conducted by them in schools particularly in the rural areas enabling health officials to take measures against diseases.The DC also urged the health department to conduct counselling camps for the youths who face many challenges in today’s time.

Hindrance to school building construction
TURA: The school managing committee of the Daram Union RMSA Secondary School in North Garo Hills has written to the Director and State Project Director, RMSA DSEL complaining against the incomplete construction of the school building and lack of teaching staff at the school. According to the managing committee, funds for the construction of the school building was sanctioned by the government in 2016 however, not even half of the work has been completed till date. The committee alleged the contractor concerned of delaying its completion and absconding. The committee urged the officials to direct authorities of the education department in the district to initiate stern action against the erring contractor and restart construction immediately. It also informed that the school was facing shortage of teaching staff as two newly appointed teachers discontinued their work. Informing that the school’s students were performing poorly, the committee urged that eligible and suitable candidates are re-appointed to fill the vacant posts at the earliest.
