Routes changed for district council polls
Shillong: This is for the general information of the citizens of Shillong that in view of the ensuing elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and the polling date of which has been fixed on February 27 from 7am to 4 pm that some roads have been declared as no-entry zones. Considering the enormous flow of vehicles deputed for election duty to Polo Grounds and JN Stadium for return of polling personnel and EVMs after the close of poll, the following roads have been declared as No Entry Zone on February 27 from 5pm onwards. The road from Polo Market towards Golf Links, McCabe Point towards Polo Market, Vilco School to Fourth Furlong, New Colony to Fourth Furlong, M.E.S to Fourth Furlong. Further, the following route, Polo Market – Mc Cabe Point -Fourth Furlong- Urkaliar-Nongmynsong- Golf Club- CRPF Point, Polo will function as a Ring Road to ease traffic congestion at Polo Point and Fourth Furlong and to facilitate movement of personnel and vehicles deputed for poll duty. It is therefore requested that instructions are be adhered to and inconvenience cause is regretted.
KHNAM youth wing extends support to Passah
SHILLONG: The youth wing of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has extended support and conveyed its blessings to its president Thomas Passah. Passah will be contesting the Jaiaw council seat as an independent candidate and has chosen ladder as his symbol. In a statement issued here, the KHNAM state youth wing expressed hope that the electorate of Jaiaw will support Passah.
Proficiency course in Koch dialect introduced
TURA: In a bid to restore the lost glory of the ancient Koch language, the Koch Krorang Mathop (Koch Sahitya Sabha), the literary wing of the Koches of Meghalaya has decided to introduce a proficiency course in Koch language to all interested public to enable each individual to read, write and speak the dialect. Addressing the 30th foundation day celebration of the Koch Krorang Mathop held at Patijhora, in South-West Garo Hills, Upen Hari Koch, a leading literary figure amongst the Koches stated that it is a matter of great pride that the Koches of Garo hills have been able to preserve the ancient Tibeto-Burman Koch dialect in its pristine purity in spite of the massive sanskritization during the early 19th century. It was now essential to propagate the same amongst the masses, he added. Earlier, Adviser of KKM, Umendra Koch recalled the early days of the KKM and stressed that the new generation has to shoulder the responsibility of carrying the rich legacy of the Koch language forward. A resolution to move the government to consider introduction of Koch dialect at select primary schools was also adopted at the meet.
One-day workshop on use of foldscope
SHILLONG: The Department of Botany, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong organised a one-day workshop on “Assembly and Use of Foldscope” and “Twinning Programme” on February 16. The workshop was conducted to popularize the Foldscope which is an origami-based paper microscope conceived and developed by Dr. Manu Prakash and his team from Stanford University, USA.It is a paper microscope which can be used to observe microscopic samples at 140 times magnification. It can be attached to a smartphone and magnification can be further increased with the help of digital magnification of the smartphone.The students were taught how to assemble the microscope from a sheet of paper and how to prepare biological samples and mount them on the microscope and how to visualize the magnified images using smartphone.
Awareness for women entrepreneurs held
Shillong:CUTS International, Jaipur in collaboration with Impulse NGO Network organized an awareness generation workshop on ‘Export Procedures and Development Schemes for Women Entrepreneurs’ at Golfer’s Nest, Golflink on February 16. The purpose is to generate awareness amongst prospective women exporters, traders and entrepreneurs in the North East Region of India. Discussion on overcoming the common challenges and lack of knowledge have also been identified during the project on women traders & entrepreneurs. The key objective is to study the challenges and opportunities on mainstreaming gender in trade and generating awareness among the women stakeholders about trade facilitation, cross-border trade opportunities and prospects that they can explore.
Hajong body formed in WGH
TURA: Aiming at working for the development and welfare of the society, the Meghalaya Hajong Welfare Association (MHWA) was recently formed in West Garo Hills. The association elected Deben Hajong as President, Kaushik Hajong, Anukul hajong and Nabakrishna Hajong as vice presidents, Rupam Hajong as General Secretary, Sujit Hajong and Jagadish Hajong as joint secretaries, Ananda Hajong, Rupayan Hajong, Lelin Hajong and Poritosh Hajong as organizing secretaries, besides 20 other executive members.
Missing
Shillong: The office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills informed that Rudra Chettri (52 years old) has been missing since January 23.His height is 5’3, has an oval face, and a fair complexion. He was last seen wearing a sky blue shirt, checked trousers and black sandals.He is mentally ill. Repair of Soksan bridge delayed
TURA: In view of the delay to re-construct the Soksan Bridge at Resubelpara which was washed off in a devastating flood a few years ago, members of the Resu-Mendi Regional Unit of the ADE recently met Deputy Commissioner S C Sadhu and urged him to look into the matter. According to the association, failure to re-construct the bridge is not only posing difficulties to the people but also to the people from outside who come to the area. “The absence of the bridge has resulted in difficulties to general commuters, businessmen and especially, school students who use the bridge to go to school. We have urged the deputy commissioner to initiate work on the bridge immediately and to monitor the work,” the ADE said adding, it would take its own course of action if their request was denied.
