SHILLONG: The state government has ordered a magisterial probe into the lynching of two persons in West Garo Hills district recently.
This was informed by the Home Minister, James Sangma, to the Phulbari MLA, SG Estamur Mominin, here on Wednesday.
The Home Minister added that the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner has instituted a magisterial inquiry into the matter and it will be headed by SDO (Civil), Dadenggre.
Two persons, Mokibul Akond of Chibinang and Mikseng Marak of Williamnagar, were lynched by an angry mob numbering close to a 1000 on suspicion the duo were dacoits. Another person Bitha Rabha suffered severe injuries.
Following the incident and a huge uproar from several quarters, Mominin along with four other MLAs of Garo Hills wrote to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, and Home Minister, James Sangma.
Talking to newsmen, Mominin said he and the four other MLAs have also urged the chief minister to compensate the families of the victims and the latter has assured it would be done.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA from Rajabala, Azad Zaman, has moved the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission demanding immediate compensation for the areca nut traders who were lynched.
