NONGSTOIN: The MDA government has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for completion of the District Jail in Nongstoin, which has been abandoned for 15 years.
Nongstoin MLA Macmillan Byrsat announced on Friday that the state government has taken the initiative to complete the pending district jail.
The construction of this jail started in 2004 but the ‘ghost house’, as it is referred to by locals, finally received the much-awaited fund.
Several NGOs from the district had submitted memorandums in the past demanding the completion of the jail but in vain.
Home Minister James Sangma said the district jail needs to be accomplished as Shillong Jail is too congested. Byrsat seconded him.
Lauding the decision of the government, Byrsat said work will start within few months.
