Winners of letter writing campaign felicitated
SHILLONG: The winners of ‘National Level Dhai Akhar Letter Writing Campaign’ were felicitated during a programme at the office of senior superintendent of post offices on Friday. The campaign was held from June 15-October 31, 2018 based on the theme ‘Letter to my Motherland’. A student from Christ School, Nongsder, Umiam, namely Tsuzolu Keyho bagged the first prize in the Inland Letter Card category (Below 18 years). The winner was awarded with a cash prize of Rs 25,000. Several other winners under various categories were also felicitated with cash prizes during the programme.

Three die in separate accidents
TURA: Three persons were killed in separate accidents in Garo Hills in the last two days. The handyman of a bus was crushed to death after it ran over him on Friday morning when he was lying under the vehicle to repair some parts. The incident took place in the Hawakhana bus stand area around 11 am. The driver was unaware of the handyman under the vehicle and drove to make space for a public bus. On Thursday, two teenagers died and 18 more were injured when a Bolero pick-up truck (ML 08 5824) fell into a gorge at 10:30 am in South Garo Hills. It was informed that the truck was headed for a wedding to Wachalgre village. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle at Buga Dongram village and plunged into a 30 meter depth gorge. Eighteen-year-old Krit Ch Sangma of Wachalgre village died on the spot while 13-year-old Chikam Ch Momin died in a nearby health centre. It was also informed that 10 persons were admitted at Sibbari Health Centre and five critically injured persons were shifted to Tura Civil hospital.

First Tura Bishop honoured
TURA: The first Bishop of Tura and recipient of the state government’s Pa Togan Nengminza award for Social Service, this year, Rt. Rev. George Mamalassery was honoured by the Catholic Church of Garo Hills on Friday with a ‘Ruby celebration’ during which a new Diocesan Pastoral Centre constructed by him was also blessed at Walbakgre, here. The honour was bestowed on Mamalassery for having completed 40 years as the Bishop of Tura. He retired in 2007 and was made Bishop Emeritus by the Vatican. Mamalassery, who was ordained as a priest in 1960, joined the pioneer work of evangelization in the Garo Hills, soon after.

Indigenous food fair in GH
TURA: A daylong food fair to raise awareness on the beauty of indigenous and traditional cuisine as well as the importance of organic and chemical-free fruits and vegetables grown in abundance in the region was showcased at Tura police parade ground on Friday. Organised by the North East Slow Food and Agrobiodiversity Society, the fair laid emphasis on promotion of sustainable development of the sector in this part of the state. The fair which came to a close in the evening witnessed a steady stream of visitors and consumers eager to get their hands of the rich diversity of local cuisine, fruits and vegetables that were on display for sale at the stalls.

Poor students get exercise books
SHILLONG: Meghandini Mahila Samiti on Thursday, donated exercise books and other stationery to underprivileged students of Pynthorumkhrah Lower Primary school in Polo. Social worker and businessman Dwarka Prasad Singhania attended the event as chief guest and distributed the stationery to the students. The Samiti has proposed to undertake generous acts as such in future for the needy.

Heavy vehicles prohibited in EKH
SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner has issued an order on Friday, promulgating Section 144 under the CrPC in the district with immediate effect. The order restrains heavy vehicles (more than 9 tonnes) to ply on: SD Road to Mawpdang and Jaroit to Nonghali. Moreover, in a report received from the executive engineer, PWD (Roads), District Project Implementation Unit and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, it was said that the roads have been highly damaged and could further deteriorate because of extensive plying of heavy vehicles.

Section 144 imposed in Ri Bhoi
NONGPOH: The District Magistrate of Nongpoh has promulgated Section 144 under CrPC, on Friday where by dumping of solid waste, construction waste, direct discharge of liquid waste via drains and streams is prohibited. The order prohibits cutting of trees, stone quarrying and mining. Moreover, discharge of plastic, human and solid waste into river Umran is strictly prohibited.

Christ School convocation
SHILLONG: The Christ School International held it tenth convocation ceremony for the kindergarten students on Friday. The programme began with a prayer led by Rev Fr Augustine and a song by Class 12 students. During the programme, various cultural performances showcased the talent of the students and the parents expressed their gratitude over their children’s development. Principal of the school, C Varghese delivered a speech on the occasion.

Campaign on road safety
SHILLONG: The NSS unit of St. Dominic College Dum-Dum organised an awareness campaign on traffic rules, road safety and effects of noise pollution on Friday. The campaign started with an address by the Principal followed by a silent march from the college campus via Nongthymmai junction to Rynjah. The march culminated in a public address at Rynjah market. The students of the college addressed the public highlighting the hazards of noise pollution, especially due to unnecessary honking near educational institutions, needless use of loud speakers and so on. The students also spoke on issues like violation of parking rules, reckless driving, drinking and driving, overtaking and abuse of mobile phones while driving which results in fatal accidents. Pamphlets were also distributed to the drivers and pedestrians regarding traffic rules and safety measures. The objective of the public address was to motivate people to be more responsible, compassionate and alert and work towards road safety and thereby improve living conditions.
