SHILLONG: The Bansara Eye Care Centre recently conducted a two-day Free Glaucoma eye screening and awareness programme at Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills District and Nangbah, West Jaintia Hills District respectively as part of ‘World Glaucoma Awareness’ week.
Collaborating with the 4th Semester, Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Department students of Shillong Women’s College, the Bansara Eye Care centre conducted the awareness programme in the form of a road show motivating and encouraging people to undergo regular eye checkup.
While simultaneously, they also organised a free eye screening camp where as many as 314 patients were screened.
As far as the Glaucoma awareness programme is concerned, a total of 220 people took part.Awareness is critical, as further research shows that although most people have heard of Glaucoma (96 per cent), only a third (31 per cent) realise it is an eye disease and just 17 per cent know that it can lead to blindness.
