Shillong: NPP MDC Alvin Khyriem Sawkmie has been elected as deputy chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Wednesday during the ongoing budget session.
Delivering his maiden speech, Sawkmie pledged to be impartial and follow the autonomous district rules. He also pointed out the combination of young leaders and experienced MDCs in the KHADC.
Other young MDCs elected this year include Congress’s Bajop Pyngrope and Fantin Lakadong.
Chairman PN Syiem, former Mawsynram MDC said members should not get emotional but should be guided by rules.
Congress MDC Ronnie Lyngdoh said “it is a healthy trend” that youths are joining politics.
UDP MDC Paul Lyngdoh said Sawkmie reminded him of his early days in politics.
HSPDP MDC Martle Mukhim said Sawkmie has to display his maturity and maintain decorum of the House.
Adding a bit of wit, he said he looked forward to Sawkmie becoming an MLA.
