HC pursues PIL to improve roads in state

SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has followed up pending PIL to improve the road condition in parts of the state.
Pillan T. Sangma, advocate of the High Court of Meghalaya, had filed a PIL for repairing the road from Rongsak Tinali connecting NH-34 (Rongsak Tinali) to Williamnagar town and its adjoining areas and also for construction/repair of road starting from Simsang RCC Bridge (Dolong) , starting from Warimagre to Samanda Block via Nengsang Adugre (Durama) and also to complete the construction of pending Rongap Bridge (Dolong) at Baija which is in between Rongsak Tinali connecting Williamnagar main Town.
There was also a plea for immediate repairing of road from Garobadha to Selsella, Selsella to Rajabala, Rajabala to Pulbari and Pulbari to Tikirkilla which falls under PWD Department.
Following the delay, the advocate Pillan filed an application seeking direction from the High Court to issue direction to the Public Works Department for immediate repairing of the road.
In this regard, the court issued notice and further directed PWD to file their affidavit in respect of the road condition of Williamnagar area as well as Garobadha to Selsella, Rajabala and Trikikila within the period of three weeks.
Earlier, advocate Pillan had made a plea to direct the PWD to construct and repair the road from Tura to Baghmara, Baghmara to Siju cave and Baghmara via Rongara to Balpakram National Park and the court had in November last directed the contractors to complete the construction of the roads.
Meanwhile, the affidavit of the Forest and Environment Department said that Rs.22,34,000 was sanctioned for improvement of 12.20 kms road originating from Baghmara-Maheshkhola PWD road at Hatisia which terminates at old helipad located at Balpakram Plateau.
The work for improvement of the road will start on April 1 this year to be completed by June 30.
