TURA: A trader from neighbouring Assam who was dealing in arecanut was kidnapped and later murdered by a gang of criminals who lured him to the border region of Dalu in West Garo Hills, police say.
The body of Rohidul Islam was recovered by police from a jhum field in Ontapara village of Dalu on Monday.
One of the criminals involved in the murder, Willip D Sangma (37) of Ontapara village has been arrested on Wednesday. The accused is believed to be the Mastermind behind the entire incident.
Another two criminals who allegedly took part in the murder, Rohitson R Marak and Mose D Sangma, are currently absconding.
The gang had contacted Rohidul of Joradanga village in Mancachar Assam misleading him into believing that they had an arecanut plantation and was looking for a buyer and directed him to come to Sensenggre village.
The victim hired a Mahindra pick up truck and headed to Dalu region on Saturday after which he became untraceable until police recovered his body.
The driver of the hired vehicle, Nur Aziz, is also missing. Police have recovered the abandoned vehicle from the area of Dalu itself and search is on to trace the missing driver and the two suspects who are on the run.
