SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) wanted interviews for job to be conducted under video surveillance by the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC).
The KSU has petitioned the Chairman of MPSC to have video surveillance for job interviews to ensure transparency in appointments.
In the letter, the general secretary of the union, Donald Thabah said to remove apprehensions from the public eye, video surveillance is crucial.
The KSU had also submitted a memorandum to the chief minister Conrad Sangma wherein it demanded revamping of the recruitment system by the MPSC.
He recalled that Sangma had assured the KSU delegation last year that the matter will be looked into and that the suggestion in the context of video surveillance or video coverage of examinations is feasible and of utmost significance. In this connection, the union urged the MPSC to update the members of the union and the public about the developments regarding setting up of the new mode of conducting examinations under video surveillance.
In the case of State of Meghalaya vs Phikirbha Khariah on April 6, 2018, the order of the Supreme Court bench comprising Judges, Adarsh Kumar Goel and Rohinton Fali Nariman stressed the need to have videography done during selection process to ensure transparency.
“We are of the view that for the purity of selection to the public posts, it is desirable that as far as possible, the selection process conducted by the selection bodies, especially the State Public Service Commissions and the State Selection Boards, is videographed. It is desirable that at examination centres as well as interview centres, CCTV cameras are installed to the extent viable. Footage thereof may be seen by an independent committee of three members and report of such committee may be placed on the website concerned,” the order said.
