SHILLONG: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has said constraints of a coalition government have posed a hurdle to achieve its goal of implementing Inner Line Permit (ILP) which was mentioned in its election manifesto.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, general secretary Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar said, “There will be different ideas in a coalition government and we have to respect those.”
With the government moving to amend the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act with a proposal to include ILP provisions in it, Lyngdoh said that the party will check the effectiveness of the entry and exit point.
Asked about extending support to the renewed demand for ILP, he said, “The demand for implementation need not be raised only through agitation. We believe in discussing it across the table.”
Commenting on the introduction of railway in the state, Lyngdoh said that the party does not oppose any developmental activity provided the ILP is implemented to protect the local people.
It may be mentioned the government has prepared the draft of the proposed amendments to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act in an effort to give more teeth to it since some pressure groups have asserted the act is ineffective to tackle influx in its present form.
