SHILLONG: The Opposition Congress on Tuesday said the party would only grow stronger in the state and not perish as claimed by NPP state president WR Kharlukhi.
Kharlukhi had earlier said that the Lok Sabha elections, which concluded in the state recently, will sound the death knell of the Congress in the state.
Senior Congress leader and MDC Ronnie V Lyngdoh said that the Congress has been around for more than a 100 years and wondered how a state president of a small party with not even a single MP can finish it off.
“Even if they wish and do everything within their means, Congress will be there and will even get stronger,” he said.
He also questioned as to why the NPP is so keen to see the Congress disappearing adding that instead they should fight politically with better schemes, policies and programmes.
Earlier, Kharlukhi had claimed that the announcement of the results of the Lok Sabha elections on May 23 next will spell the end of the Congress party in Meghalaya.
While the NPP heads the ruling MDA government in the state, the Congress is the principal Opposition party in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Both the parties are engaged in a direct contest in Tura parliamentary seat where the Congress has fielded its veteran leader and former chief minister Mukul Sangma and the NPP, its former MLA and a former union minister, Agatha Sangma.
The BJP is also in the fray in Tura constituency.
