GUWAHATI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) here has predicted that the Northeast states may not be affected by Cyclone Fani if there is no deviation in its current track even as a threat of it having an impact on the region looms.
According to the India Meteorological Department bulletin on Wednesday, the extremely severe cyclonic storm (Fani) over west central Bay of Bengal moved slowly north-northwestwards and is expected to cross Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali, around Puri during Friday afternoon with maximum sustained wind speed of 170-180 kmph gusting to 200 kmph.
“Cyclone Fani, currently moving at high speed towards Odisha across the coastal areas of Bay of Bengal, should not have any effect on Northeast. However, if there is even a slight deviation, the forecast might be different,” Sunit Das, scientist at the Borjhar-based RMC, told The Shillong Times on Wednesday.
The Met office here however has warned of thunderstorm accompanied with gusty wind speed (30-40 kmph) and lightning likely at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Thursday.
Heavy rain fall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on May 2.
According to the national weather bulletin, the forecast is of occurrence of rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy fall likely over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and Meghalaya on May 4 and 5.
The summary of observations recorded on Wednesday morning revealed a trough at mean sea level running from eastern Uttar Pradesh to Nagaland across Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.
Available data indicated that light to moderate rain occurred at most places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, at a few places over Manipur with very heavy to heavy falls over Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam during last 24 hours.
