CEO reviews counting readiness
NONGSTOIN: The Chief Electoral officer of Meghalaya, F.R Kharkongor, accompanied by the Joint CEO, K L Nongbri, visited Nongstoin today to review the preparedness and arrangements for counting of votes on May 23. The CEO along with his teams inspected the strong room where EVMs, VVPATs are kept and counting halls of both Mairang and Nongstoin assembly segments before meeting the district officials at the DC’s conference hall here. The CEO highlighted the new ECI guidelines and rules to be implemented for the counting to take place on May 23. He urged upon the district election machinery, including the police department, to take care of the relevant factors like electricity, internet facilities, security, election manpower to avoid any human error saying “there is no room for error or any blunder.”
Tourist duped in city
SHILLONG: A tourist was allegedly duped and abandoned by a tourist taxi driver and two unidentified people here in the city.Kondavalasa Krishna Chandra Patnaik lodged a police complaint that on April. 28 around 7.30 pm, he met two unidentified women and one tourist taxi driver at Police Bazar, Shillong and discussed regarding sightseeing on April 29. According to complaint, the trio took him around Police Bazar, Shillong and went to an unknown location about five kilometers away from Police Bazaar in a tourist cab, where they abandoned him. Later, Patnaik realised that his gold chain and a bag containing cash Rs. 20,000 were missing. It may be mentioned that similar incidents have happened in the city, even in the past.
BSF nabs drug trafficker
Shillong: Acting on a tip-off, the BSF troops deployed at Dawki, East Khasi Hills seized 11 packets containing 2190 Yaba tablets from one person identified as SK Tluanga, a resident of ARC, Happy Valley on Tuesday. The BSF noticed a suspicious movement of a vehicle (ML-05-P-0459) near the international border and stopped the vehicle. Upon searching, they recovered the tablets from his possession. It can be mentioned that the Yaba tablet is consumed in Bangladesh in large quantity, despite repeated special drive conducted by Bangladeshi law enforcement agencies against this drug. Consumption of Yaba tablet is prohibited in Bangladesh and addiction of the drug has risen.
Bangladeshi intruders held
SHILLONG: The BSF troops deployed at Chandaboi, South Garo Hills apprehended four illegal intruders who were trying to cross the international boundary on Monday. Upon seeing their suspicious movements, the troops immediately chased them and succeeded in apprehending two Bangladeshis identified as 19-year-old Md Siraj and 35-year old Mohammed Kamal Sheikh. The two remaining intruders fled back to Bangladesh. The BSF also recovered miscellaneous items and Indian currency from their possession. The apprehended persons and seized items were handed over to the concerned department for further action.
Nucleus Pig Farm inaugurated
NONGPOH: The Government of Meghalaya under the department of Animal Husbandry (AH) and Veterinary Department inaugurated the first-of-its-kind ‘Nucleus Pig Farm’, in the state in a function held at Regional Pig Breeding Farm in Kyrdemkulai, Ri Bhoi, on Wednesday.
With an aim to promote the production of piggery farming to meet the requirement of the state, chief guest Prestone Tynsong lauded the initiative of AH and Veterinary Department for their dedicated efforts to finally inaugurate the pig farm. Tynsong also spoke at length the various missions of the state government to improve the economy of the people which include the milk mission, jackfruit mission and others, and now in a bid to uplift the farmers’ economy, this new technology of rearing pig was adopted.
Presbyterian youth conference
Shillong: The Mawkhar Church CE Union under Mawkhar Presbyterian Church, Shillong will host the 23rd biennial conference of the Presbyterian Youth Fellowship, Presbyterian Church of India which is scheduled to be held from the May 3-5. The parking spaces in the interest of the general public is Compound KJP Synod Sepngi Office, Mission Compound, Compound KJP Higher Secondary School, Mission Compound, one side parking at Mawkhar Main Road, Shillong Municipal Parking Lot (Jaiaw Taxi Stand), Motphran, one side parking along the Cemetery Road, Mission Compound, Compound of DNS Wahlang, Working Women Hostel and Nabon Synod College, Mission Compound, one side parking along Jaiaw Students’ Field and Synod HS School, Mission Compound.
Medical camp conducted
SHILLONG: The Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, Shillong organised a medical cum OPD consultation camp at Mawryngkhong Kher Village under Sohra Bholaganj Community and Rural Development Block, East Khasi Hills on April 20. The objective of the camp is to provide information and awareness on general check-up and health condition through education and health, nutrition, lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular, dental etc. About 150 villagers from the village and adjoining areas were provided free healthcare check- up. Speaking during the occasion Secretary Dorbar Kher Mawryngkhong Shella, H. Youthborn welcomed the doctors, staff nurses and paramedics informed that this is the first time that such a programme is held in the village. He also appreciated and lauded the efforts undertaken by the hospital. A donation of Rs 10,000 was donated to the hospital on behalf of the Dorbar Kher Mawryngkhong.
Byrnihat needs waste dump: HYC
Nongpoh: Peeved over the non-availability of waste dumping ground in Byrnihat areas, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council met Urban Affairs minister Hamlet Dohling to apprise him of this issue on Tuesday. A memorandum was also submitted. The delegation of HYC led by it’s vice-president Donbok Mannar and general secretary Johnny Syiem along with its members submitted the memorandum seeking the Dohling’s intervention to allot Solid Waste Management in Byrnihat areas. Speaking to the press, Mannar said that the organisation expressed concern over the non- availability of proper waste dumping ground which may affect local populace of the area. He also said that, due to this urgent need of the solid waste management project in the area, the HYC Byrnihat Circle took up the matter with the concerned minister seeking his immediate intervention. He also informed that, during their meeting with Dohling, he assured to take up the matter if land is available in Byrnihat area to set up the Solid Waste Management project.
