NONGPOH/SHILLONG: A group of people allegedly vandalised the residence of Michael Warjri, secretary of Hima Nongspung at Balakhawa village in Ri Bhoi on Tuesday afternoon.
As per reports, the house was attacked due to Warjri’s opposition to the ongoing construction of a PMGSY road at Balakhawa village by the Assam government.
Warjri escaped the attack unhurt, but his whereabouts were not known till the filing of this report.
It was also learnt that the mob attacked Warjri because he raised his voice against Assam government schemes which were allegedly supposed to be implemented in Meghalaya villages.
The district Deputy Commissioner DP Kharsati along with Superintendent of Police C Syrti rushed to the spot to prevent any further flare up and also to take stock of the situation.
It was also reported that the magistrates from Kamrup district of Assam along with police personnel also rushed to Balakhawa village fearing clashes between the residents of the two states.
Earlier the Meghalaya High Court had given a stay order on the petition filed by Warjri against the ongoing construction of the PMGSY road.
Meanwhile, the Hyn-niewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) Northern region has urged the MDCs and MLAs to inspect the PMGSY road.
Speaking to reporters in Shillong, president of HNYF Northern region, Marcus Marten said the daughter of Warjri informed them that people working under the Assam contractors pelted stones at their house.
He called up Warjri, who responded , but later when Marten called again, the latter’s phone was switched off. Marten immediately informed the district authorities.
