TURA: A demand to upgrade the border town of Dalu into a full-fledged civil sub-division is being made by political leaders, including current GHADC MDC Kurosh Marak with the submission of a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma during the latter’s visit to the region earlier this week to participate in the diamond jubilee celebrations of Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School.
In the memorandum, Kurosh Marak highlighted the importance of Dalu and the need upgrade it into a sub-division which would help bring better facilities for the people. He mentioned that the Dalu region had not received its share of development and pointed to the absence of any proper supply of drinking water facility to its citizens.
Marak has also called for the implementation of the Dalu Greater Water Supply project to provide safe drinking water to the people.
Health factors like improvement of medical infrastructure in the health centre, improvement and expansion of Phukan Memorial College named after Dalu’s very own freedom fighter and strengthening of the crime fighting apparatus of the police were also brought to the notice of the chief minister.
It may be mentioned that Dalu is one of the oldest frontier towns in the region which has for ages had close trading links with neighbouring Bangladesh. Coal and other minerals are exported from Garo Hills to Bangladesh through Dalu.
Dalu was also a major relief camp for thousands of fleeing Bangladeshi citizens during the 1971 war against Pakistan.
